ARTISTS BOOKS
I love the versatility of the Artist's Book; such an adaptable structure for holding and communicating ideas.
To be able to pace the "looking"; to slowly reveal and peel back layers of meaning. It's delicious!

Unique book by Sonja Georgeson - hand-made in Maleny, Queensland, Australia - January to March 2013
12 pages - side bound: 10 pages from an Edo Period (1603-1868) kimono factory account book. 2 pages of archival tissue.
All pages treated with encaustic medium made from beeswax and dammar resin.
NB: the encaustic medium imparts a slight tackiness to the pages, however they will not adhere together or be damaged in any way when peeled apart. The "stickiness" is part of the story; the difficulty of entering into the Palace of Women.
There is also the scent of beeswax/honey.
Images from vintage postcards and photographs printed digitally onto kozo paper.
Covers constructed from box board, vintage 1960's woven grass wallpaper and bound using metallic thread.
End papers: recycled paper with digital prints.
Other materials embedded in the encaustic medium are: muslin, haiku by Buson, pigment, bamboo, Japanese maple leaf and snake skin.
The book is wrapped in a fine, soft, cotton cloth referencing the inner most kimono worn next to the skin of the concubine
and presented with the colophon in a strong hand-made box covered inside and out with grey Unryushi paper.
