SHOPPING

Picture
Where to start? Shopping in Morocco is a true adventure!

With thousands of years of trading history - business transactions are practically an art form.

From ancient times, Caravans carrying exotic goods from lands to the south and east, have crossed the desert of the Sahara; winding their way up and over the Atlas Mountains and down to the souks in cities like Marrakech. From there, dispersed to the sea ports of Essaouira on the Atlantic coast and Tangier on the Mediterranean and beyond.....

Experiencing the pulsing vibrancy of the Souks is exciting and inspiring, but can be overwhelming and confusing.
I've sourced many places over the years that offer quality products and reasonable prices.
I'll help you to navigate, find what you're looking for and barter and buy.

Remember to allow luggage space and weight for all your purchases on your homeward flight.

Here I've composed a Shopping List - in no particular order - of what I consider to be the best mementoes of Morocco -

Shopping List for Morocco
  • Rugs, carpets, mats - these deserve to be at the top of the list. The women of Morocco create the most exquisite works of art for floors, walls and furniture. The colours and combinations will blow you away. Beautiful stories woven into both traditional patterns and contemporary designs.
  • Babouche - these are the famous leather slippers and there is no end to their designs, patterns, colours, textures and materials. You won't be able to stop at one pair.
  • Argan Oil - Morocco is the only place in the world that grows Argan trees and the nut oil is extracted for cosmetic and culinary use. A bottle of pure Argan oil is a must for face, body, hair and nails.
  • Cactus Seed Oil - more expensive than Argan oil but just as prized.
  • Essential Oils - Rose, Orange Flower, Cedar, Rosemary, Thyme, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lavender, Sandalwood etc.
  • Incense - various types but I buy Frankincense and now there is a supplier of Oud, in Marrakech.
  • Perfume - very exotic, heady scents with oil bases instead of alcohol, to last in the heat.
  • Jewellery - silver rings, bracelets and earrings, Amazigh Tuareg silver crosses, bellas, veil weights, talismans, Moroccan bead and coin necklaces, Arab designs. With a keen eye, it's possible to find original and potent symbolic pieces as Moroccan mementoes.
  • Spices - all the best to make authentic Moroccan dishes in your home kitchen, including Ras el Hanout.
  • Caftans and Jellabas - to instantly help lift your mood when you suffer the post-holiday blues back home.
  • Pottery / Ceramics - bamboozling and beautiful!
  • Art - paintings and sculptures - edgy or naive; traditional or contemporary.
  • Art materials - that Majorelle blue paint, walnut ink, powdered pigments.
  • African textiles - Congolese Raffia Coth, African Wax, Malian Indigo, Moroccan towels, Bogalan Mud Cloth, Mauritanian Tie-Dye.
  • Leather - bags, poufs, sandals - a huge variety of designs.
  • Raffia shoes and bags - handmade in Essaouira.
  • Trimmings - tassels, braids, ribbons and beads - floor to ceiling displays in the Souks.
