Touring with Sonja in Morocco - frequently asked questions

What IS included in the tour price?
  • all accommodation,
  • all breakfasts,
  • all meals during our stay in Tamnougalt,
  • entries to all cultural sites and events as per the itinerary,
  • transport as per the itinerary,
  • tutors fees and basic materials for hands-on sessions during the Purely Textiles tour,
  • tutors fees and some materials for the All Art Morocco tour. 

What IS NOT included in the tour price?
  • international or internal flights,
  • entry and exit airport transfers,
  • food, other than stated above, alcohol, bottled water,
  • travel and health insurance - compulsory,
  • optional activities eg: hammams (spa treatments), cooking workshop, camel rides,
  • personal expenses,
  • tips,
  • personal art materials.

Is it safe to travel in Morocco?
  • I would like to reassure you that I have found Morocco to be a safe and welcoming country.
  • I am currently living peacefully in Essaouira and have been for over three years.
  • While on tour with me in Morocco, you have my on-the-ground knowledge.
  • I trust and respect my guides, drivers and accommodation - their level of care and attentiveness is excellent.
  • Please allow your common sense to prevail; all travel, whether in Australia or overseas requires some degree of caution.

Is there a dress code for Morocco?

What currency do I use in Morocco?
  • MOROCCAN DIRHAM - 1,000 MAD = $150 AUD approximately.
  • Australian dollars CANNOT be exchanged in Morocco.
  • ATM's are widely available and are the safest and easiest way to access cash.
  • FYI - Citibank accounts have no international withdrawal fees.
  • You can withdraw a max. of 2,000 MAD each transaction (up to 3 withdrawals daily)
  • Most major credit cards are accepted in Morocco and are handy for buying that something special you may not have budgeted for.
  • Please remember to notify your bank and/or credit card issuing company of your intention to travel.
  • You can order and buy Moroccan Dirham in Australia before you go OR order Euros and exchange them for dirham at the airport when you arrive in Morocco.
  • I recommend you have 2,000 MAD in cash when you arrive.
  • You will notice a general lack of small change in Morocco. Try to maintain a small supply of coins and small denomination notes.

What are the toilets like in Morocco?
  • While on the road our comfort stops are clean and generally have pedestal toilets
  • All our accommodation has more than adequate bathrooms.
  • I recommend you carry tissues with you as sometimes toilet paper is not always available.
  • Public toilets cost 2 DH - 30c

If needed, are there pharmacies in Morocco?
  • Yes, well stocked, everywhere and most medications are available over the counter - no prescription required.

How many people will be on my tour?
  • My tours are small and intimate for everyone's enjoyment - a maximum of 6 people.

What is my accommodation like?
  • ​I have chosen a range of Moroccan accommodation from traditional hotels to Moroccan riads and kasbahs. 
  • On booking you will receive website links to all your accommodation.

What is the food like in Morocco?
  • Delicious! Fresh and seasonal food is available everywhere.​
  • The average price of a tagine is between 60 and 80 DH (Dinner can be less than $20 AUD)
  • Coffee and fresh juices are 20-30 DH

Can I drink the tap water?
  • I recommend that you don't.
  • I advise you drink bottled water only. Available everywhere.

What power adapter is needed in Morocco?
  • Morocco uses the same two-prong​ plug as used in Europe (CEE7/16 standard)

Is there wifi and can I use my mobile?
  • There is free wifi in all our accommodation. Cafes also allow you access to wifi.
  • For your mobile phone - you may choose to purchase a Moroccan SIM - purchasing from the Maroc Telecom shop at the airport in Casablanca or Marrakech is a good option and should cost approx. 200-300 DH for the time you are in Morocco.
  • Skype, Whatsapp and Messenger are the methods I use to communicate with family and friends in Australia. 

What is the weather like?
  • Morocco is considered a cold country with a hot sun.
  • You can check the weather history of the places we will be visiting on the Accu Weather website HERE 
  • We will be in mountain, desert and coastal regions from early to late spring, also mid to late Autumn - depending on the tour you choose.
  • Layers are your best option.
